Semester Online Announces First Group of Affiliate Partner Schools
Semester Online, the first undergraduate education initiative to offer online rigorous, for-credit courses from a consortium of top-tier colleges and universities, announced today that Baylor University, Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Temple University have joined Semester Online as Charter Affiliate Partners.
According to each university’s academic policies and procedures, undergraduate students enrolled at Charter Affiliate Partner schools will be offered approved Semester Online courses to combine with their on-campus course offerings and will receive full college credit toward their degree for each approved Semester Online course they successfully complete. Charter Affiliate Partners will have exclusive access to the meaningful data about best practices in online learning that will arise from Semester Online’s unique pedagogical approaches.
The Semester Online consortium providing the courses – which are taught live – includes Boston College, Brandeis University, Emory University, Northwestern University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Notre Dame, and Washington University in St. Louis.
“Semester Online's teaching institutions provide distinctive course offerings for undergraduates in an online learning experience that matches the rigor and richness of on-campus classrooms,” said Ed Macias, Chair, Semester Online Consortium and Provost Emeritus, Washington University in St. Louis. “Through the Affiliate program, more students will now be able to continue their coursework while pursuing opportunities or commitments away from campus."
“Our Affiliate Partners will make Semester Online readily accessible to a diverse group of high achieving undergraduates seeking a compelling online academic experience,” said Andrew Hermalyn, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Semester Online.
Eleven Semester Online courses, taught by top faculty from the Semester Online teaching institutions are being offered this fall with additional courses for the Spring 2014 semester to be announced in September. Students from Baylor, SMU and Temple will be able to register for Semester Online courses with administrative approval through their home universities.
Technology, instructional design and infrastructure support for Semester Online is provided by 2U, Inc., the leader in creating online academic experiences for top colleges and universities.
